Landing page accessibility review: contrast, labels and link text

A faint grey headline, a button that only says "Go" or a form field with no label all lose visitors who can't read or use them. Most of these are copy and design details you can fix in an afternoon. This page covers the most common problems (with sources), the WCAG contrast rule, a quick checklist, and a $19 review that gives you 3 copy fixes within 24h.

The most common problems

The WebAIM Million report tests the home pages of the top one million websites. It found that "95.9% of home pages had detected WCAG 2 failures", with an average of 56.1 errors per page. The most common: low contrast text (83.9% of home pages), missing alternative text for images (53.1%), missing form input labels (51%), empty links (46.3%), empty buttons (30.6%) and missing document language (13.5%). WebAIM notes that "96% of all errors detected fall into these six categories."

The contrast rule

The W3C's Understanding Contrast (Minimum) says text needs "a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1", and "Large-scale text and images of large-scale text have a contrast ratio of at least 3:1". The reason it gives is simple: "Some people cannot read faint text."

Quick checklist for a landing page

  1. Check contrast on your headline, body text and CTA button against the 4.5:1 rule.
  2. Write real button and link text. "Start free trial" instead of an icon or "Click here".
  3. Label every form field with visible text, not just a placeholder. See the signup and checkout friction review.
  4. Add alt text to images that carry meaning, such as product screenshots or logos used as proof.
  5. Keep sentences short and plain; see the readability review.

Automated checks only find part of the problems. Test with a keyboard and a screen reader too.

What the $19 review gives you

We read your live page and pick the 3 gaps most likely to cost you signups. You get 3 before → after rewrites (hero, CTA, offer or proof), each with a one-line reason and a metric hypothesis you can check later, ready to paste, within 24h of 1 BTC confirmation. No call and no account. See an example deliverable (excerpt from a public sample) or browse all public samples.

Honest limits: this is a copy review, not a WCAG compliance audit or certification, and we don't promise a lift. If an accessibility issue is among your 3 highest-impact gaps (a faint CTA, vague link text, a missing label), we include it. For a full testing program, see audit vs CRO agency.

FAQ

What are the most common accessibility problems on home pages?

The WebAIM Million report lists low contrast text (83.9% of home pages), missing alternative text for images (53.1%), missing form input labels (51%), empty links (46.3%), empty buttons (30.6%) and missing document language (13.5%).

What contrast ratio does WCAG require for text?

WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.3 (Contrast Minimum) requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for text, and at least 3:1 for large-scale text.

Why does accessibility matter for conversions?

Some people cannot read faint text, as the W3C notes. If your headline, CTA or form labels are hard to read or missing, some visitors can't follow your page to the next step.

Is the $19 review a WCAG compliance audit?

No. It's a copy review, not a compliance audit, and we don't certify anything. If one of the 3 highest-impact gaps on your page is a readability issue such as a faint CTA, vague link text or a missing form label, we include it in the fixes. For compliance, use an automated checker plus a specialist.

What do I receive for $19?

3 before and after rewrites for the highest-impact spots on your page (hero, CTA, offer or proof), each with a one-line reason and a metric hypothesis, ready to paste, within 24h of 1 BTC confirmation. No call and no account.
