Landing page above the fold review: what your first screen has to do

Most visitors decide from the first screen whether your page is worth a scroll. This page covers what the research says about the fold, a first-screen checklist for laptop and phone, and — if you want an outside read — a $19 review that returns 3 paste-ready fixes within 24h, starting with what's above the fold.

Does the fold still matter? What the research says

These are general web-usage studies, not landing-page conversion data. They tell you where attention goes, not what your conversion rate will be.

First-screen checklist: laptop and phone

  1. The headline says the outcome, in words a stranger can repeat back.
  2. Who it's for is visible without scrolling.
  3. One primary button is visible on a phone, with a verb that says what happens next.
  4. The product is shown: a real screenshot or short demo, not an abstract illustration.
  5. One line of proof sits near the button: a named user, a number you can back up, or a public example.
  6. Price or commitment is hinted ("free plan", "14-day trial", "from $X") if that's what people ask about first.
  7. Nothing pushes the message down: oversized images, cookie banners, announcement bars or navigation that eats the phone screen.
  8. There's a reason to scroll: the first screen hints at what's below so it doesn't look complete.

What the $19 review gives you

We open your live page on laptop and phone widths and pick the 3 gaps most likely to cost you signups, starting with the first screen. You get 3 before → after rewrites (hero, CTA, offer or proof), each with a one-line reason and a metric hypothesis, ready to paste, within 24h of 1 BTC confirmation. No call and no account. See an example deliverable (excerpt from a public sample) or browse all public samples.

Honest limits: it's a copy review, not a redesign. We don't build mockups or run heatmaps or A/B tests. If your first-screen problem is mainly design or layout, we say so in the reason line, and a designer or CRO agency may be the better fit.

FAQ

What does “above the fold” mean on a landing page?

It's the part of the page visible before scrolling, on the visitor's screen. It differs by device, so check both a laptop and a phone. It still matters: Nielsen Norman Group's 2018 eyetracking data found people spent about 57% of their page-viewing time above the fold.

What should be above the fold on a SaaS landing page?

At minimum: a headline that says the outcome, who it's for, one primary button that says what happens next, and something that shows the product is real (a screenshot, demo or proof). Anything that pushes those below the fold on mobile, like a large image or cookie banner, is worth fixing.

Do people still scroll?

Yes, more than they used to. The same Nielsen Norman Group study found people scroll more than in the past but still look more above the fold than below it, and about 74% of viewing time went to the first two screenfuls. The first screen has to earn the scroll.

Is this different from the hero section copy fixes?

The hero copy fixes focus on headline, subhead and button wording. This review looks at the whole first screen on laptop and phone: what's visible, what's pushed down, and whether a stranger gets the point before scrolling. The deliverable is still 3 paste-ready copy fixes; if something in the layout hides your message, such as the button falling below the fold on a phone, we say so in the reason line.

What do I receive for $19?

3 before and after rewrites for the highest-impact spots on your page, prioritising what's above the fold (hero, CTA, offer or proof), each with a one-line reason and a metric hypothesis, ready to paste, within 24h of 1 BTC confirmation. No call and no account.
