SaaS landing hero & CTA checklist: 12 checks for your first screen
Most visitors decide in the first screen whether to scroll, click or close the tab. That screen is your hero: a headline, a subhead, maybe some proof, and one button. Run these 12 checks on your own page for free. If you'd rather have the fixes written for you, paste your URL below and get 3 paste-ready rewrites within 24h for $19.
Headline (checks 1–3)
- Names the reader. Could a stranger tell, from the headline alone, whether this product is for them? "For finance teams closing the month" beats "For modern teams".
- States a change, not a category. "Close the books in 3 days instead of 10" says what gets better; "All-in-one finance platform" only says what it is.
- Survives the squint test. Read only the largest text on the screen. If it could sit on a competitor's site unchanged, it isn't specific enough yet.
Subhead (checks 4–6)
- Answers "how?" The subhead explains the mechanism behind the headline promise in one sentence: what the product does to make the change happen.
- Uses the buyer's words. Swap internal terms ("workflow orchestration layer") for what customers type into search or say on calls.
- Stays under about 25 words. If it needs a second sentence, the second sentence probably belongs further down the page.
Proof on the first screen (checks 7–8)
- One piece of proof is visible without scrolling. A named customer, a usage number you can stand behind, or a short quote with a real name and role.
- The proof matches the promise. If the headline promises speed, the proof should be about speed, not a generic "loved by teams" line.
CTA button and the line under it (checks 9–12)
- The button says what starts. "Start free trial", "Book a 20-min demo" or "Create your first invoice" beat "Get started" and "Submit".
- The cost of trying is stated next to it. One short line under the button: card required or not, trial length, time to set up.
- There is one primary action. A second button is fine only if it is clearly secondary (outline or text link) and serves a different visitor, such as "See pricing".
- The button repeats further down. Visitors who scroll for proof need the same action waiting for them after the proof, with the same words.
Scoring: count the checks your hero passes. Under 8 usually means visitors leave before they understand the offer. The first four checks tend to matter most.
What the $19 audit adds
We run these checks on your live page and pick the 3 gaps most likely to cost you clicks. You receive 3 before → after rewrites for your headline, subhead, button text or the line under it, each with a one-line reason, ready to paste. No call and no account. If the problem isn't the copy, we say so. An optional +$40 full rewrite of your hero and primary CTA is available after the audit.
Proof: read 3 public teardowns first
- Vercel teardown — developer platform
- Resend teardown — email API
- Framer teardown — website builder
Same format you receive: quotes from the live page, 3 before → after fixes. Want examples for headlines only? Read the free hero headline guide.
You get a BTC invoice page with address, amount and an open-in-wallet link. Work starts once payment is seen. Not sure yet? Ask for 1 free observation on /audit.
FAQ
Can I use this checklist without buying anything?
Yes. The 12 checks are free to use on your own page. The $19 audit is for when you want someone else to run them on your live URL and write the fixes for you.
How many checks should my hero pass?
Aim for all 12, but start with the first four: who it is for, what changes for them, what the button starts, and one piece of proof on the first screen. Those usually move the most visitors.
What do I receive if I order the $19 audit?
3 before and after rewrites for your hero and CTA (headline, subhead, button text, the line under the button or the proof beside it), each with a one-line reason, ready to paste. Delivered within 24h of payment.
How do I pay?
Paste your URL, press Pay $19 in BTC and the invoice opens with the address, the amount and an open-in-wallet link. Work starts once the payment is seen. An optional +$40 full rewrite of your hero and primary CTA is available after the audit.
