Landing page length: long vs short, and what visitors actually read
Should you cut your landing page down or add more sections? The honest answer is that length matters less than what sits in the first two screens and whether each section earns its place. This page shows how much visitors read and where their attention goes (with sources), a checklist to decide, and a $19 review that gives you 3 copy fixes within 24h.
How much visitors read
In How Little Do Users Read?, Jakob Nielsen writes: "On the average Web page, users have time to read at most 28% of the words during an average visit; 20% is more likely." Adding words doesn't mean they get read.
Where attention goes
Nielsen Norman Group's Scrolling and Attention study found that "users spent about 57% of their page-viewing time above the fold" and "74% of the viewing time was spent in the first two screenfuls". Visitors do scroll, but the top of the page carries most of the weight, whatever the length.
Checklist: how long should your page be?
- Put the whole pitch in the first two screens: what it is, who it's for, why it's better and the CTA. See the above-the-fold review.
- Add length only to answer objections a buyer really has: price, setup, security, switching. See the value proposition review.
- Cut sections that repeat the same claim in different words.
- Make it scannable: descriptive subheads, short paragraphs, plain words. See the readability review.
- Repeat the CTA after the main proof and at the end, so long pages never leave the visitor without a next step.
There is no ideal word count. These studies describe average behaviour, not your audience; measure your own page.
What the $19 review gives you
We read your live page and pick the 3 gaps most likely to cost you signups. You get 3 before → after rewrites (hero, CTA, offer or proof), each with a one-line reason and a metric hypothesis you can check later, ready to paste, within 24h of 1 BTC confirmation. No call and no account. See an example deliverable (excerpt from a public sample) or browse all public samples.
Honest limits: we rewrite 3 spots, not your whole page, and we don't promise a lift. If length is part of the problem, the fixes say what to cut or move. For a full testing program, see audit vs CRO agency.
You get a BTC invoice page with address, amount, a QR code and an open-in-wallet link. Work starts once payment is seen. Not sure yet? Ask for 1 free observation on /audit.
FAQ
Should my landing page be long or short?
It depends on how much a visitor needs to know before acting. A simple, low-cost offer can be short; a new or expensive product usually needs more explanation and proof. Either way, the first two screens do most of the work.
How much of my landing page do visitors read?
Nielsen Norman Group found that on the average web page, users have time to read at most 28% of the words during an average visit, and 20% is more likely.
Do visitors scroll down long landing pages?
They scroll, but attention drops. In Nielsen Norman Group's most recent study, users spent about 57% of their page-viewing time above the fold, and 74% of the viewing time was spent in the first two screenfuls.
Will you tell me what to cut?
The $19 review gives you 3 before and after rewrites for the highest-impact spots. If a section buries your offer or repeats itself, that can be one of the 3 fixes. It's not a full restructure of the page.
What do I receive for $19?
3 before and after rewrites for the highest-impact spots on your page (hero, CTA, offer or proof), each with a one-line reason and a metric hypothesis, ready to paste, within 24h of 1 BTC confirmation. No call and no account.
