Landing page high bounce rate: how to fix it

Your analytics show most visitors leave your landing page almost immediately. Before you redesign, check what the number measures and where the copy loses people. This page explains how Google Analytics 4 defines a bounce (with sources), a checklist for the first 10 seconds, and a $19 review that gives you 3 copy fixes within 24h.

What GA4 counts as a bounce

Google's Analytics Help on engagement rate and bounce rate says an engaged session is one that "Lasts longer than 10 seconds", "Has a key event" or "Has 2 or more screen or page views", and that "The bounce rate is the percentage of sessions that were not engaged." On a one-page site, that means a visitor who reads for under 10 seconds and leaves without an event is a bounce.

For pages with low engagement, Google suggests checking "whether the content correlates well with the marketing you use to drive users to those pages or screens, and whether those pages or screens offer users easy paths to the next steps you want them to take." It also advises checking your measurement code if the problem is widespread.

Checklist for the first 10 seconds

  1. Check tracking first. Make sure the page is tagged correctly before you change copy.
  2. Match the source. The headline should echo the ad, post or search that sent the visitor. For paid traffic, see the Google Ads landing page review.
  3. Say what it is and who it's for in the first screen. See the above-the-fold review.
  4. Give one obvious next step. One primary CTA, visible without scrolling, including on a phone.
  5. Make it easy to read. Short sentences and plain words; see the readability review.

A lower bounce rate isn't the goal in itself; signups are. Watch both after you change the page.

FAQ

How does Google Analytics 4 define bounce rate?

Google's Analytics Help says the bounce rate is the percentage of sessions that were not engaged. An engaged session lasts longer than 10 seconds, has a key event, or has 2 or more screen or page views.

Why is my landing page bounce rate so high?

On a single landing page, a visitor who reads for under 10 seconds and leaves without an event counts as a bounce. Common copy causes: the headline doesn't match the ad or search, the offer is unclear above the fold, or there is no obvious next step. Google also suggests checking that your measurement code is set up correctly.

What does Google suggest when engagement is low?

Google suggests checking whether the page content correlates well with the marketing that drives users there, and whether the page offers easy paths to the next steps you want users to take.

Do you look at my analytics?

No. We don't access Google Analytics or install tracking. We read your live page and give you 3 copy changes; you check the effect on bounce and engagement rate in your own reports.

What do I receive for $19?

3 before and after rewrites for the highest-impact spots on your page (hero, CTA, offer or proof), each with a one-line reason and a metric hypothesis, ready to paste, within 24h of 1 BTC confirmation. No call and no account.
