Landing page readability review: simpler copy, fewer lost signups

Founders write landing pages the way they talk to investors: long words, long sentences, internal jargon. Visitors skim, stumble and leave. This page covers what conversion data says about readability, a plain-language checklist you can run today, and a $19 review that rewrites your 3 highest-impact sections in plain words within 24h.

What the data says about readability

These are correlations across many pages, not a guarantee for yours. Simpler copy removes friction; it can't fix an offer nobody wants.

Plain-language checklist for your landing page

  1. Headline under about 10 words, with no word a customer wouldn't say out loud.
  2. Cut three-syllable words where a short one works: "use" not "utilize", "help" not "facilitate", "start" not "commence".
  3. Replace internal jargon ("platform", "solution", "synergy", your feature code names) with what the user actually does.
  4. One idea per sentence; split anything over about 20 words.
  5. Lead with the verb in buttons: "Start free trial", not "Free trial initiation".
  6. Short paragraphs: two or three lines on a phone.
  7. Explain any necessary technical term once, in plain words, near where it first appears.
  8. Read it aloud. Where you stumble, your visitor will too.

Digital.gov's plain language guides describe plain language as content that is clear and easy to understand, and cover how to write, design and test it for your specific audience. More help: hero section copy fixes, value proposition review.

What the $19 review gives you

We read your live page and pick the 3 gaps most likely to cost you signups — often the places where the copy is hardest to read. You get 3 before → after rewrites (hero, CTA, offer or proof) in plain words, each with a one-line reason and a metric hypothesis, ready to paste, within 24h of 1 BTC confirmation. No call and no account. See an example deliverable (excerpt from a public sample) or browse all public samples.

Honest limits: we rewrite 3 sections, not the whole page, and we don't run readability scores on every paragraph. For a full rewrite see copywriter alternative.

FAQ

Does landing page readability affect conversion rates?

Unbounce's 2024 Conversion Benchmark Report found that pages written at a 5th to 7th grade level converted at 11.1%, 56% higher than pages at an 8th and 9th grade level and more than 2x the 5.3% of professional-level writing. It also found difficult words had the strongest negative correlation with conversion rate. That's correlation across many pages, not a promise for yours.

What reading level should a SaaS landing page aim for?

Simple enough that your buyer reads it without effort. Unbounce's data favoured a 5th to 7th grade level. For technical buyers you can keep precise product terms, but cut long words and long sentences around them.

How do I check my page's readability?

Paste your hero and main sections into any readability checker to get a grade level, then look for words of three or more syllables and sentences over about 20 words. Nielsen Norman Group also recommends testing with real users: ask them to explain the page back in their own words.

Won't simple copy sound unprofessional to B2B buyers?

Plain doesn't mean childish. Digital.gov's plain language guides describe it as content that is clear and easy to understand. Busy buyers skim; short words and sentences help them, whatever their job title.

What do I receive for $19?

3 before and after rewrites for the highest-impact spots on your page (hero, CTA, offer or proof), written in plain words, each with a one-line reason and a metric hypothesis, ready to paste, within 24h of 1 BTC confirmation. No call and no account.
